Things enjoyed only by 90’s kids – part 1

1.Real mails

Before the advent of mobile phones, internet and email, postal mails were the chief means of communication.. Being a 90’s kid, I got the chance to receive and send real mails.. Not like these days, when we receive thousands of messages daily via Watsapp, but don’t have enough time even to scroll down..

My dad was working in Kuwait then.. He used to send letters to mom.. I used to count the number of times my name “Sheri” was written..As I was a beginner in reading, I could read and understand only my name..I used to cry when my name was mentioned less number of times.. So to make me happy, dad started writing my name in the letter in every space available.. Nothing better can express the love and affection than a hand-written letter. . I think even love letters are no more available.. 😉

2.Audio cassettes

In those days audio cassettes played a great role in entertainment.. While my dad enjoyed listening to classic tamil songs, I enjoyed recording my own voice in those cassettes..All his favourite songs were replaced by his daughter’s songs😂.. Sometimes I enjoyed rolling the film out using a pencil and using the film for tying things..

3.Greeting cards

The usage of greeting cards is getting tapered day by day… We used to exchange greeting cards on occasions like birthday, christmas, new year, anniversaries, wedding etc…

Once dad sent a christmas card which played jingle bells music when opened… I kept bragging about it till it died..

We used to exchange small cute christmas cards which were available just for one or 2 rupees..

4.”Cycle” Ice cream and Popsicles

Nowadays kids are lucky enough to get an ice cream whenever they scream for ice cream… Ours was not the case..Every week, an uncle used to come by cycle and sell ice creams and popsicles… We used to run behind him screaming out loud..

Only cone ice creams available in 3 sizes.

  • 50paise-smaller cone
  • 1rupee-medium sized cone
  • 2rupees-larger cone

Popsicles – 2 types

  • 1rupee-coloured popsicles
  • 2rupees-special white popsicles. We named it paal ice(milk popsicles)

5.”Super Mario” video game

It was the most popular video game of our time.. We, bunch of kids, spent our holidays playing this game at my cousin’s home.. The big-nosed short chubby man greatly influenced our childhood..
